A Medieval Sword Of Oakeshott Type Xa [Editor's note: Listed by Bonhams as a Type Xa, I would personally be inclined to categorize this sword as Type XI] With Unusual Pommel Of Octahedron Form 12th/13th Century
In excavated condition, with broad double-edged blade with narrow central fuller over most of its length on each side to the rounded point, hilt comprising straight quillons of slight octagonal section swelling at the tang, and large pommel drawn-out to blunt points 85.5 cm. blade, 103.3 cm. overall ProvenanceSotheby's Olympia, Fine Antique Arms, Armour & Militaria, 10 July 2002, lot 60 The quillons conform to Oakeshott's Style 3 A sword with a similar blade and pommel is in the Army Museum, Riga, Latvia For other examples with pommels of related form see Hugo Schneider and Karl Stüber, Waffen in Schweizerischen Landesmuseum, Griffwaffen I , 1980, cat. no. 21; and Christie's London, The Collection of Arms and Armour of The Late Dacre Kendrick Edwards, Eqr..., 25 April 1961, lot 145 Sold for £5,000 ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOUR INCLUDING THE S.
